Naked Ambition

After an exhausting mixture of howling and weeping thru the latest UK blockbuster Calendar Girls, I thought I’d use it as an excuse to talk about nudity.
I myself of course being no stranger to it at all, having previously done a touch of glamour modelling (I was younger and much slimmer back then!) and even a streak at Sheffield United’s Aston Villa match, a long long time ago…

What does continue to amaze me, is how the British public still find it amusing, even taboo! Only this week Glynis Barber (ex Dempsey & Makepeace star), caused a furore by NOT stripping off for ‘The Graduate’. Doesn’t Ms Barber know that the only reason the play grossed several million pound in a short space of time, was because of beauties such as Jerry Hall and a long list of others, dared to drop their knickers for an entire audience? Not that I mind prudity, but still Ms Barber should have considered her modesty before she took the role, not during! Did she somehow think the audiences (who were sat in their Macs on the edge of their seats) might forget, or perhaps be forgiving? Not so Ms Barber – Get em off – or get off! Still they say no publicity is bad…

Its Keith Chegwin I feel sorry for. For no one has ever let him live down his brief foray into naturism. Some producer somewhere decided his game show needed a unique element. (and what a tiny wrinkled unique element it was too!)
Poor Cheggers, he couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about but I have to say it did make us all giggle a little, just a pity I don’t remember what it was all in aid of! Did you know he is an identical twin? (ooo! perish the thought of two naked Cheggers!)

For years Babs Windsor titillated us all in losing her bra in endless Carry On movies. Saucy has somehow lost its charm these days, shame really. Although i'm glad to say she kept her baps out of Eastenders, Peggy being the sour faced cow she is, probably wouldn’t approve of such things.

Well done Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, (et-al), for you helped bring some sense back into the subject. The women of the W.I. who originally posed for the Calendar, were not only brave - they were clever too, for there’s a whole nation of British people out there, who still find the nude an amusing subject. And if it raised more than eyebrows (and apparently close to a million in sales for cancer charities), then in your honour ladies, I shall raise a glass!
